Planning? Ewwww....

S.D. governor pulls plug on part of library Web site
A library creates a collection of legal useful resources for teens, some people complain about the 'planned parenthood-edness' of some of the links, the Church tattles on the them and calls the Governor, and the resources are scraped off the face of the site. That's great. Because instead of having access to badly needed information about your health and nature (one of the links pulled was to the well-known and informative Go Ask Alice!) there is now nothing. Because no information is better than good information... right?

Wow. That's just like trying to filter out "pornographic" keywords and unwittingly excluding information on like, breast cancer.

andie : No. That's just ignorance about the abilities of the technology. That I can understand. I still don't like it but at least they have good intentions. But this is actively damaging to our children and their understanding of themselves and their health. Avoiding addressing any and all aspects of any sexual topic is like handing a soldier a gun and never teaching him/her how to use it. You could seriously screw up your life if you don't know how to use it. You may even kill someone.

Melly : But that's just the problem. There was stuff about abstinence. Go ask Alice! has all sex-related information including abstinence. It's not like the stuff on the site was all porn or something. It was INFORMATION. Important information. At least from what was actually spoken of in the article. The site is totally blocked. And as for television (and other media) causing increased and earlier sexual activity, that certainly does seem to be true. But you also have to take into account that biologically, at least girls, are "becoming women" (reaching puberty and having their first period) earlier and earlier. TV's not causing that. And society is making us all grow up faster and faster, not just sexually, but intellectually, socially, financially, and emotionally. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it's certainly happening.
